Sure Shot Sid was born in 1845 on the rugged Texas frontier. As a young man, he served in the Civil War, where his skill with a rifle and six-shooter earned him the nickname “Sure Shot.” When the war ended, Sid returned home determined to put those years behind him and build a life on the open range.
He found work on cattle drives, moving herds across the great trails of the West. Around the campfire, Sid became known for more than his steady aim—he had a gift for flavor. Using pepper, citrus, smoke, and coffee from the chuck wagon, he crafted seasonings that turned trail food into feasts. Cowboys said his blends packed the kick of gunpowder, and before long “Gunpowder Seasoning” was a staple from cattle camps to saloons.
Sid’s family preserved those recipes, passing them down through generations. Each heir kept the tradition alive, but it was his great-grandson, Buck Sidwell, who carried them into the modern era. Determined to honor Sid’s originals while making them bolder, Buck sharpened the citrus, deepened the smoke, and perfected the balance of spice and sweetness.
